As members of the Indigenous Education team, Indigenous Education Elementary Facilitator will provide school-based support through a coaching/mentoring model to guide teaching and learning that demonstrates respect and appreciation for Indigenous knowledge systems, histories and truths and uphold Indigenous and human rights.
This position reports to the System Lead: Indigenous Education and Outdoor Environmental Education
Key Responsibilities :
- Support the implementation of the DDSB Indigenous Education Policy and Procedures;
- Consult and collaborate with Elementary schools on professional learning, SLPs, school improvement goals, supporting learning for staff and providing opportunities for staff and students to expand their knowledge on Indigenous knowledge, ways of knowing and Truth and Reconciliation
- Assist with the development of partnerships and liaise with local Indigenous organizations, communities, and stakeholders;
- Participate in various local, regional, and provincial Indigenous Education initiatives;
- Provide opportunities outside of regular school hours for Indigenous families to participate in programs to support the education of their children;
- Provide professional development to support Indigenous student success and increase awareness of Indigenous histories, perspectives, contributions and Treaty Education for DDSB students, staff and trustees;
- Support DDSB Indigenous Studies programs;
- Review, acquire and distribute resource materials to support Indigenous Education; Participate with Indigenous Education Advisory Circle with Superintendent of Education and System Lead;
- Maintain and support the Indigenous Education website for educator and family resources;
- Collaborate with Indigenous Education Department in programming and planning inter-departmental and system professional development opportunities for staff that:
- Include and prioritize Indigenous voices (authors, artists, scholars, etc.);
- Are free of harmful stereotypes and narratives;
- Accurately represent Indigenous contributions both past and present, Treaties, residential schools, accurate histories and the ongoing colonization;
- Ensure Indigenous expertise and knowledge systems as equal and on par with Eurocentric knowledge;
- Expose students to learning-centred around current issues involving Indigenous Rights.
- Perform duties as otherwise assigned by the Superintendent of Education/ Indigenous Education System Lead;
The successful candidate must demonstrate:
- Connection with and/or understanding of Indigenous histories, perspectives and ways of knowing;
- Experience working within/alongside Indigenous communities;
- Experience teaching and integrating Indigenous history, ways of knowing and pedagogy into the curriculum;
- Skills in managing consultative and collaborative processes;
- Skills in effective problem solving;
- Experience with positive community relations; and
- Excellent communication skills.
Qualifications:
- Ontario Teacher's Certificate in good standing
- Indigenous ancestry, lived experiences and community connections preferred

- Demonstrating experience in accurately represent Indigenous contributions both past and present, Treaties, residential schools, accurate histories and the ongoing colonization
- Strong connection with and/or understanding of First Nation, Métis and Inuit cultures, histories, perspectives and culturally relevant and responsive pedagogy
