The expected starting base salary for this position is $77,944 - $81,416 annually, depending on a variety of factors including qualifications and experience. Once hired, you will progress through a wider salary range over time as you continue to develop job knowledge, skills and competencies for the role.

What you’ll be doing
Reporting to the Executive Director, Reconciliation, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (ED, REDI) and working closely with the REDI team, the Indigenous Cultural Safety and Humility Coordinator (ICSHC) supports the implementation of BCCNM’s Indigenous-Specific Anti-Racism (ISAR) Action Plans and the Indigenous-Specific Anti-Racism work plan, including data collection (briefing notes, deliverables, milestones, goal implementation) for the reporting and evaluation framework for the action plan and other specific projects, as required. The ICSHC works collaboratively to support various types of Indigenous specific education learning events, including the BCCNM Indigenous-Specific Anti-Racism Book Club, and acts as a resource for other teams to help advance BCCNM’s work in Indigenous-Specific Anti-Racism. Further, as this role is situated in the REDI team, the ICSHC also supports the advancement of equity and inclusion initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Under the direction of the ED, REDI, supports the implementation of Indigenous-Specific Anti-Racism Action Plans as well as executing the Indigenous-Specific Anti-Racism work plan alongside the REDI team by collating information and reports, coordinating meeting agenda and packages, and creating presentations. Keeps track of reporting periods, sets reminders, and ensures appropriate follow up.
- Coordinates and/or supports, in collaboration with Communications and the Executive Office, BC Health Regulators (BCHR) events, staff meetings, and other learning events to advance BCCNM’s work in Indigenous-Specific Anti-Racism and to foster culturally safe experiences for Indigenous attendees.
- Supports the REDI team in the delivery of the organizational Indigenous-specific anti-racism learning events including lunch and learns, and the BCCNM Book Club. Acts as a liaison between groups, schedules presentations and meetings, sends meeting materials and reminders, and addresses any questions from participants.
- Directs and responds to questions or communications for the REDI team from staff or external groups (MOH, FNHA, other organizations). When unsure, escalates questions and communications to the ED, REDI or the ICSH Consultant as needed. Supports the ED, REDI and ICSH Consultant in follow-ups and communication pieces as needed.
- Supports data collection for the reporting and evaluation framework for the action plan and specific projects as required; produces progress reports for Indigenous partners, the Senior Leadership Team, Board and other key audiences.
- Supports the ICSH Consultant in providing key advice and recommendations to BCCNM leaders regarding Indigenous practices and issues and in advising Board and Committees. Alongside the ICSH Consultant, fosters greater understanding, and advancement of equity and inclusion initiatives with external partners, Board, and Committees.
- Working closely with the ICSH Consultant, coordinates BCHR-wide board and committee Indigenous Communities of Practice (ICOP) and future BCCNM staff communities of practice by scheduling and organizing meetings, taking minutes, and completing any actions from or relating to the ICOP.
- Under the direction of the ICSH Consultant, provides advice and acts as a resource to the Governance team in regard to their recruitment and support of Indigenous committee members, including the sourcing and delivery of learning events, including lunch and learns, to committee members.
- Working alongside the ICSH Consultant, nurtures relationships with local First Nations Elders and Knowledge Keepers, implementing strategies to continually strengthen their engagement and increase our knowledge of Indigenous ways of knowing and being.
- Supports the ICSH Consultant in the logistics of preparing for the attendance of local Knowledge Keepers and Elders at BCCNM events. This includes arranging transportation, ensuring honoraria are available, and ensuring their well-being during the event.
Your education & skills â
- Three to five years of relevant experience working in Cultural Safety and Humility and Indigenous-specific anti-racism, and/or equivalent combination of a bachelor’s degree and experience within an Indigenous context.
- Lived experience and understanding of Indigenous culture.
- Recognizes the role Indigenous-specific racism and colonialism have played in harming Indigenous Peoples in Canada, and more specifically to First Nations on the lands now called British Columbia and actively works to support initiatives related to the eradication of Indigenous-specific Racism.
- Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous Peoples and communities across BC and understanding of current and emerging events pertaining to Indigenous communities.
- Indigenous worldview and commitment to the eradication of ISR, and commitment to CS&H
- Knowledge and commitment to anti racism, EDI, creating and fostering safe spaces
- Established knowledge and network of Indigenous communities, services, agencies and leaders throughout BC
- Thorough knowledge of relevant reports and legislation – i.e. In Plain Sight, Truth and Reconciliation Report, Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls Report, United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, BC’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, Remembering Keegan, A BC First Nations Case Study Reflection.
- Knowledge of Canadian colonial impacts on Indigenous people in social and health contexts, including social, economic, political, and historical realities impacting Indigenous communities
- Knowledge of Indigenous centered care and Indigenous wellness
- Strong interpersonal and team-based skills, and the commitment to embrace and act on Indigenous-specific racism and cultural safety and humility to help the organization advance our commitments towards reconciliation.
- Strong communication, facilitation, and writing skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive and cooperative relationships with internal and external partners.
- Ability to synthesize and communicate complex information in a variety of formats, including slide decks, written reports, and report on findings and recommendations.
- Ability to coordinate projects and teams on a project basis.
- Ability to plan, organize, set and accomplish objectives and goals in a complex, fast paced environment.
- Experience with Indigenous community engagement and coordination work is an asset
- Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous data governance is an asset.
- Advanced skills in MS office including Outlook, PowerPoint and Word required. Working knowledge of MS SharePoint and MS CRM or similar programs. Demonstrated ability to learn and adapt to online systems and tools.
- Demonstrated understanding of equity, diversity, inclusion, and cultural humility as they apply to health care is an asset.
