Position Summary:
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Indigenous Initiatives (DII) and working closely with the Senior Advisor, Indigenous Curriculum and Pedagogy, the Indigenous Projects Officer will develop and manage projects aimed at enhancing Indigenous educational pathways and supporting increased opportunities for culturally informed learning at McGill. This role focuses on Indigenous student and community engagement, developing comprehensive models that reflect financial and non-financial resources to recruit, retain, and support Indigenous students through graduation. The Officer will also play a key role in developing and managing projects that foster stronger relationships with Indigenous communities to ensure that student engagement with Elders, cultural knowledge holders, community experts, etc. is based on mutual respect and relationality.
Primary Responsibilities - 70%:
- Develop and implement strategies to build relationships with Indigenous community partners and McGill stakeholders that are integral to student support. (i.e. Indigenous Tuition Initiative)
- Implement policies and practices that significantly impact Indigenous students.
- Identify gaps and streamline communication between Indigenous communities and McGill units regarding student initiatives.
- Engage with Indigenous media and leadership teams to share information affecting students in their community
- Develop and oversee systems to manage data from initiatives to increase Indigenous student support.
- Prepare statistical reports for unit reporting, project evaluation, and planning.
- Assist in developing and implementing special and recurring projects/initiatives (e.g., McGill Pow Wow, Indigenous Advisory Council).
- Develop and implement methods for evaluating the effectiveness of programs and initiatives, incorporating feedback for continuous improvement.
- Annually report on activities, outcomes, and progress towards goals, maintaining thorough documentation.
- Contribute to key communications efforts within the Office of Indigenous Initiatives.
- Collaborate with internal and external partners, including the Communications and External Relations team, service providers, and Indigenous leadership.
Supporting the Advancement of Indigenous Curriculum and Knowledges (30%)
- Develop and manage the Advancing Indigenous Knowledges and Community Relations Program, supporting the respectful and culturally relevant inclusion of Indigenous knowledges through visitor/event initiatives across the university.
- Develop and implement an equitable and coordinated approach to Indigenous student/community member-led initiatives/projects aimed at providing culturally enriching and competent learning spaces.
- Develop and manage a program to coordinate enhanced student access to Indigenous Elders, community experts, etc.
- Prepare, manage, and execute day-to-day financial tasks related to responsibilities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
- 3-5 years of related experience, preferably with Indigenous communities.
