Company Description

Ferrovial Construction Canada Inc. and VINCI Construction Grands Projects are undertaking the design, build, and finance of the Ontario Line Southern Civil, Stations and Tunnel (South Civil) package.

As Ontario Transit Group Constructor GP, we have mobilized our design and construction crews, with major works. The South Civil contract is anticipated to be completed in 2030.

The project will strengthen Ontario’s economy by supporting an estimated 1,500 jobs at the peak of construction.

What is the project?

  • A six-kilometer tunnel and associated tunnelling works from Exhibition to Don Yard portal (west of the Don River).
  • Stations:
    • One above-ground station to be integrated with the existing GO Transit Exhibition Station.
    • Two underground stations to be integrated with the existing TTC Osgoode and Queen subway stations.
    • Four new underground stations (King/Bathurst, Queen/Spadina, Moss Park, Corktown).

Job Description

The Legal Counsel will support the Project team and the Legal Director on various insurance law matters including, but not limited to, the management of insurance claim files and logs, contractual interpretation, and managing litigation and dispute resolution proceedings.

Under the Legal Director’s supervision, the Legal Counsel will, among other things:

  • Manage processes for all property, casualty and third party liability claims ensuring accurate and timely resolution;
  • Document and maintain accurate claims files, cataloging pertinent information;
  • Work alongside insurance, site teams, finance, safety, and other internal team members to proactively identify and address claims;
  • Maintain and manage reporting of claims log;
  • Prepare reports regularly to highlight claim trends and analyze loss data;
  • Negotiate settlement amounts in conjunction with insurance teams;
  • Ensure internal and external customer satisfaction by proactively managing claims;
  • Refer claims for subrogation with insurance partners;
  • Provide support, management and direction in litigation and dispute resolution proceedings;
  • Conduct legal research and draft memoranda; and
  • Provide general legal support to the project for non-insurance related matters, including but not limited to subcontract drafting, negotiating and administration of contracts.

Qualifications

  • 5-7 years of experience in commercial insurance claims, preferably in the construction engineering, or related industries
  • Candidates must be licensed to practice law in Ontario
  • Experience in property, casualty and third party liability claims
  • Experience on P3 and other large complex construction projects is a significant asset
  • Experience with dispute resolution is an asset
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills 
  • Intellectual curiosity and great commercial judgment 
  • The ability to establish and maintain strong relationships and trust with all stakeholders
  • Strong inter-personal skills, including resiliency
