Reporting to the Roads Supervisor, The Roads Labourer position will be responsible for providing safe and accessible roads and sidewalks for the public. This position will have a focus on the repair and maintenance of City sidewalks, curbs, parking lots and other general maintenance on City property by performing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled labour including brick and concrete work in the summer months. They will also assist with trimming, sweeping, flagging, shoveling and a variety of other laboring duties throughout the year. The individual will demonstrate initiative on a daily basis, understand the role they play within the community, and have excellent customer service skills.


Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Performs scheduled road and street maintenance operations.
  • Assist with road sign maintenance, spring maintenance, patching potholes, guard rail repair, and sanding/plowing.
  • Repairs, resurfaces, and replaces worn or damaged sections of concrete structures according to grade and depth specifications.
  • Performs a variety of other labour tasks on worksites such as construction sites, sidewalks, parking lots, ditches, roadways etc.
  • May be required to assist with traffic control for Roads projects.
  • Performs all duties in a safe manner and in accordance with the Ontario Health & Safety Act and the City of Kenora’s Health & Safety Policy.
  • Provides leadership and guidance to seasonal student labourers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid “G” Driver’s License and a clean driving record.
  • Working knowledge of hand and power tools such as hammer, drill, saw, wrenches, sockets etc.
  • Experience using and safe operation of equipment for roadway brushing and tree-trimming, lawn maintenance and grass cutting equipment, and small tools.
  • One (1) year related experience in stonework, masonry, concrete, or construction work is required.
  • Chainsaw certification considered an asset.
  • Ability to get along well with others including supervisors, co-workers, members of the public and other partners in service.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Must have good communication, time management and organizational skills.
  • Must be physically fit and able to lift and carry 50 lbs. frequently and occasionally up to 100 lbs.
  • Must be able to stand and or walk for long periods of time. Ability and willingness to work in varying climate conditions.
  • Follows departmental operating policy and procedures, and provincial regulations regarding health, safety and work practices.
  • Works independently and proactively to ensure work is processed quickly and efficiently and that deadlines are met.
  • Knowledge of Ontario regulations that apply to the repair or installation of sidewalks under the Municipal Act is considered an asset.
  • Must have an understanding of concrete and roadwork maintenance techniques.
